Where We Live

Halloween. Magical? Mystical? Scary? Elusive?

There are a couple things you should know. Where we live, children go from house to house on Halloween to collect goodies under the vigilant eyes, in most cases, of their parents. Where we live, Halloween is a serious enterprise where adults regularly truck children into the neighborhood to collect their bounty.

Where we live, Halloween falls on October 31st, just like everywhere else, which, this year, is a child's dream because it is a Friday night. Where we live, tomorrow is a holy day of obligation, a high holy day. Where we live, nothing is more sacred than a high school state play-off football game, especially when it is played on the hallowed home stadium turf. Where we live, nothing can interfere with the high school play-off football game, not even Halloween.

I need to tell you a few more things at this point. I am not a social person. If I go to a party, I am the guy who watches and listens and doesn't say much. I don't care about the high school football team or its play-off game or whether my best friend's kid is on the team. I dislike children, who, on Halloween, are too excited to say "Thank you" for the goodies they receive, even if they don't mean it, and the parents who stand there and teach the children not to be thankful. I did the Halloween thing when the kids were small, but I now detest Halloween.

I found out this morning -- Where we live, Halloween is being celebrated tonight.

So, I'm changing our plans for tonight. We're going out and won't be home.

A couple of things - we live in the country and in the six (maybe, can't be sure, no real memory so I'm guessing, I think I'M the one those surgeons removed part of the brain of during the husband's tumor surgery) years we've lived here, we've NEVER had a trick-or-treater (thank doG); and THEY CHANGED THE DATE OF HALLOWEEN FOR A DAMN FOOTBALL GAME? and the kiddies finally came to a year when Halloween wasn't on a school night and was actually on a fun night like a Friday? That's just wrong.

just a little one, charlene. could find the remnants of only one egg -- it was just a mini-egging.

we do go out every halloween since the boys were young teenagers. out to dinner and a movie seemed more constructive and less dangerous for young teenage boys. that way, we get to keep the house dark, kids don't come to the door, and the dogs keep calm.

Hmm. I've never liked Halloween much myself, but the fraternity put on a haunted house for the local rugrats and I dressed as Bob the Builder. The children were really excited, had a great time (even the ones who cried) and were unfailingly polite. Maybe that's becuase I go to school in the South.

We've got football games tomorrow night around here, but we're not to the playoff season yet so no one considered changing the day. We do change it to Saturday when the 31st is on a Sunday. The urchins from our neighborhood are usually cute and polite, it's the little hmmmmm....s they truck in from miles away who cause the problems.

Happy Halloween Bill & Stacey. You go for it Bill and have a wonderful evening out. And don't forget to take the battery out of the doorbell.
